In the valley between Velika Kapela, Mala Kapela and Pljesevica are the Plivice
Lakes nestled. The karst region in which they are located is rich with valleys,
caves, forests and overground or underground streams, which was crucial to the
creation and for survival of the Plitvice Lakes. Namely, during rain or snow
melting, all the water flows into the underground - filling the subterranean
basins and streams, and then in form of a spring returns back into the lakes. In
that manner the lakes receive the greatest quantity of water. The remains of the
water flows into Crna rijeka and Bijela rijeka, which in turn flow into the
Proscensko Lake, or the stream Rjecica which flows into Kozjak. There are in
total 16 lakes which are divided onto Upper and Lower lakes. The lakes are known
by travertine waterfalls and biodynamic process of constant growth of the
calcareous tuff. In 1979 the park was inscribed into the Unesco World Heritage
List. The area is overwhelmed by flora and fauna.
